What your mouth says about you

During your lifetime, your mouth does a lot of talking but did you realise, the condition of your mouth can also tell you a lot about your general health?

Richard Guyver, a dentist based in Hampshire & West Sussex who has published a book (Live another 4006 days and improve your health with dental medicine) wrote an article in The Daily Express on Monday June 17 arguing that, in most cases, the health of the body is linked to the level of inflammation in the mouth.  He goes on to say that inflammation in the mouth is normally symptomatic of gum disease and treating the inflammation can help reduce the risks of getting certain diseases.

He then lists a number of conditions which are revealed and/or exacerbated by oral inflammation:
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Diabetes
  • Arterial disease
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Strokes
  • High blood pressure
  • Alzheimer's disease
